Before a tornado hit in May of 2013, Dan had four metal buildings on his property in Marysville, Kansas. After the tornado, only one of those buildings was still standing. Find out why Dan chose to replace the buildings he lost with another Worldwide Steel Building.
“Large but Slow” Tornado Strikes Kansas
In the spring of 2013, a widespread tornadic event produced strong winds and tornadoes across the Great Plains. During this storm-spree, an EF2 tornado, capable of up to 135 mph winds, blew through Dan’s property.
When the storm cleared away, only one of Dan’s four building was still standing. His two pole barns and Quonset (a rounded, metal structure) had been destroyed by the storm. However, the single Worldwide Steel Building on his property had survived the storm with hardly a scratch.
The Obvious Choice to Rebuild
Unfortunately, Dan lost a lot of possessions in the storm. In fact, so many of his belongings were lost when the three buildings collapsed, Dan only needed to replace all three buildings with one new one. After losing so much to one storm, choosing to build a second Worldwide Steel Building was the obvious choice.
Since the storm, Dan has referred several friends and neighbors to Worldwide Steel Buildings, and he’s told the story of his building’s strength to many more.
Oftentimes, the fear of construction stops potential customers from pursuing their dream metal building project — whether it’s a project as straightforward as a DIY metal building for a metal garage or pole barn, or as complex as a barndominium. Many worry that metal building construction, especially for a sturdy steel building, won’t really be a DIY task. They fear it will require extensive professional labor, or substantial investment in heavy equipment. But don’t worry. Worldwide Steel building systems are designed for easy construction and are cost-effective.
To ensure you get the most building for your budget, Worldwide Steel Buildings designs buildings for an easy assembly process. This construction process adheres to all relevant building codes, making the erecting phase straightforward and compliant.
Steps of the Metal Building Assembly Process
- Site Preparation: Pour a concrete slab to accommodate the square foot dimensions of your prefab metal building design, ensuring the slab is set and free of debris.
- Offloading Materials: Offload all building materials necessary to erect your metal building kit, and ensure you have everything required for your metal building project.
- Setting the Trusses: Set the truss legs on either side of the debris-free slab. This marks the official first step of your metal frame construction — congratulations!
- Adding Girts: Also known as wall studs or secondary framing, these pre-engineered components are placed on two-foot centers for superior strength.
- Setting Girders: Assemble these on the ground first, and then hoist them into position.
- Adding Purlins: These are also placed on two-foot centers, ensuring your metal structure is the strongest on the market.
- Completing End Walls: Use endwall columns and side plates to complete this phase.
- Framing Openings: A Worldwide Steel representative will advise on the best sizes and types of doors and windows for your building type before you order, ensuring a perfect fit.
- Installing Doors and Windows: Install any doors or windows, noting that overhead doors require different framing.
- Sheeting Walls and Roof: Use sheet metal panels and roof panels.
- Adding Deluxe Trim Kit: If chosen, add this along with gutters and other trim components.
- Enjoy Your New Steel Structure: Whether it’s the workshop you’ve always wanted or a garage for all your equipment, your Worldwide Steel Building is ready to withstand all weather conditions.
If the idea of erecting your own steel building seems daunting, remember that many inexperienced builders have successfully completed their DIY metal building projects without issues. Plus, there are experienced contractors in your area who can assist with the building process if needed. The quick assembly of a high-quality steel building kit also means reduced labor costs.
At Worldwide Steel, we’re not only your partner through the design process, we’re also your building manufacturer! That’s right — no middle man. That means we can be confident enough to offer you a 50-year structural warranty on your steel frame building … which in turn should make you more confident in Worldwide Steel, and in your own steel building construction abilities.

Strength, durability, and ease-of-construction are the WWSB advantage
WorldWide Steel Buildings is an innovator of do-it-yourself steel building construction systems, and one of the leading manufacturer of pre-engineered steel buildings in the U.S.
Since 1983, we have provided industrial and residential customers alike with quality, American-made steel structures adaptable to any use as a much stronger and more cost-effective alternative to traditional construction.
Our trusses are precision welded, rust-proofed, and undergo a rigorous inspection process to ensure the highest quality in our structures.
Our process
Our purlins and girts are formed from rolls of galvanized American-made steel. Our heavy duty open-web trusses are built on custom jigs manufactured exclusively for our process. All of our framing is MIG welded and double-dipped in rust-proof coating.
The steel advantage
Steel is an alloy made by a varying tempered combination of two elements: iron and carbon. This process gives steel its immense strength and durability.
Preferred ten-to-one over wood and brick construction, steel has a higher strength-to-weight ratio, capable of supporting a building of the same size as wood with less material and less need for interior support structures. This reduces cost and labor significantly. And because of its durability, steel buildings cost less to maintain, insure and can stand up to extreme environmental conditions far better than traditional construction.
“Hurricane Ike pounded our partially built arena with 80–85 mph winds from the East, North and Westerly directions for several hours,” write Christine & Steve Seat of Almosta Ranch in Houston, TX. “Needless to say, the main structure survived the storm without damage.”
The application of the steel building construction is virtually limitless. From agricultural buildings to aircraft hangars, horse arenas to churches and recreation centers, commercial buildings, garages and workshops, industrial buildings, storage units, and residential buildings, the possibilities are endless.
The WorldWide Steel Building difference
WorldWide Steel Buildings manufactures pre-engineered steel building kits that can be safely and reliably put together by the handy do-it-yourselfer.
Our trusses are pre-punched to be easily bolted together. The purlin and girt clips are factory welded and attach with self-drilling screws for ease of construction. The sheet metal attaches with self-drilling screws that are flanged and self-sealing to prevent leaks.

Making a decision about adding the building you want to add to your property can be difficult. It can feel like a single choice — stainless steel, traditional wood, or a hybrid of wood, stone and steel components — but it’s one that involves many other choices before you even break ground on your construction site. It’s also a choice that has a lasting impact on the quality and longevity of your finished product, so it’s smart to do your research on the best material for building structures. When considering factors such as quality, durability, style and price, we think it quickly becomes clear: A metal building is often the best option when choosing a material for constructing large buildings without breaking the bank.
Steel is Durable
When deciding on a building material, longevity and durability are among the most important factors. There are a lot of inexpensive ways to erect a building on a property, but if you want the high strength to withstand the forces of Mother Nature, steel is the way to go. There are Worldwide Steel Buildings in all 50 states, including those that are prone to high winds and heavy snows, so need the higher strength and durability of steel. Plus, in nearly 30 years of building projects and our customers’ heavy use, we have never had a building fail due to structural design. (Hey, if steel is good enough for skyscrapers, it’s good enough for our customers’ homes, commercial buildings and garages!) Steel structures are also nearly immune to some of the other long-term maintenance issues that plague those who choose the traditional construction industry, like dry rot, wood deterioration, fire damage (thanks to steel’s high melting point) and termite infestations.
Steel is Versatile
Another quality that makes steel the best material for building structures is its versatility. Steel buildings can be designed to suit any purpose, and Worldwide Steel Buildings designs and manufactures all types of steel buildings. They can be used for agricultural purposes, storage, youth centers, horse arenas and more. All of this customization doesn’t come at a cost to quality. Worldwide Steel Buildings reviews the blueprints for every structure built to ensure it meets the needs of the customer and that it can stand up to Mother Nature. If we didn’t, we wouldn’t offer a 50-year structural warranty.
And if you’re thinking about the sustainability of your new building, look no further than steel. Steel is energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and recyclable.
Steel is Cost-Effective
Steel is an excellent construction material for business owners because it helps keep building costs down. Besides being durable, steel framing is light enough that, normally, no cranes are needed when you buy a structure from Worldwide Steel Buildings. Additionally, steel products from Worldwide Steel Buildings don’t need a full foundation poured, nor do they need to be welded. The money saved can be used to buy a larger building than would be possible if another building material was used.
Why Worldwide Steel?
Of course, there is more to consider when planning a building than the technical issues and the price. The building must be aesthetically pleasing and match the style of other structures on the property. Structures from Worldwide Steel Buildings can be finished with colored sheet metal panels and roofing (which come with a 40-year limited warranty) so your building doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb. When you read how a customer of Worldwide Steel Buildings reviews their new structure, it’s undeniable that steel buildings are a perfect mixture of function and form.
And when you choose Worldwide Steel, you’re choosing to partner with a team that guides your decisions every step of the way. Our experts are there to help you design buildings, to assure you about your building’s structural engineering, to ensure the precision-welding done in our midwestern manufacturing facility, and to make sure you aren’t overlooking any of the little things (like eave overhangs, railings and other finishes).
